Native to isolated pockets in the mountains of West Virginia and Virginia, Canaan fir is named for the Canaan Valley near Elkins, West Virginia. It is an attractive medium sized tree that has many similarities to both the Fraser and balsam fir in growth and appearance. It tolerates wet conditions and spring frosts better than the other firs. Foliage color ranges from a rich dark green to bluish green with silvery bands on the underside.
